In the News -

This NPR story made me tear up on the way to work this morning. I love their StoryCorps series.

This story on Good Morning America made me sad. I'm sure Annamaria will be going crazy over this one. It involves the plans by the former owner and founder of Domino's Pizza to build a town goverened by Roman Catholic principles, including deciding what is or isn't to be available in private retail stores (banning things like condoms and porn). While I can understand the desire of some to be declare themselves pure by the stands they take, I also believe isolation is not the answer. Are we still requiring students to read The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne anymore? It was more than a Demi Moore movie, people. It has a powerful message.

Oh, I've heard all about Ave Maria. Tom Monaghan tried to build his Catholic town in Michigan first but was shut down repeatedly. But now that Jeb Bush is a converted Catholic, Florida has stepped up and given him the go ahead to create his own little Vatican. Of course, Florida let Walt Disney build a manufactured town, too, so I'm guessing their zoning laws are pretty lax!

The whole thing is almost too comical for me to get upset about. I'm just waiting for it to backfire--wait until the post office confiscates all the Playboys and Hustlers being sent to the Ave Maria zip code! :)

After the Puritans established New Haven they set a monument on East Rock overlooking the Fair Haven harbor that declared they were building "a city on a hill; a light to the nations." They planned the city to be a theocracy like Geneva was under Calvin. Most of the East Coast has similar stories, whether they be Puritan or Anglican. Even Rhode Island and Maryland, the two states that were safe havens for dissenters had state established churches paid for with tax dollars right into the 1800's. That's the reality of our history. But since we don't live in the past, and true Christianity isn't a coercive religion, I am NOT an advocate for trying to recreate the colonial era theocracies. Hearts are transformed by grace not by law. So, good luck Tom, and like Annamaria says, what are ya gonna do with all those Playboys and Hustlers going to Ave Maria addresses? Now isn't that an enigmatic picture -- Playboy addressed to Ave Maria, FL! O Lady Madonna .....

yep. it reminds one of the old joke about the differences between religions -
Jews don't recognize Jesus
Protestants don't recognize the Pope
and Baptists don't recognize each other in the liquor store.
wake, I love the line Hearts are transformed by grace not by law.
When do you think our modern day Pharisees will get it?

If we removed all the so-called religious practictioners from "society" the rest of us (sinners) would be so bored without your wide litany of hypocritical abuses of the flesh - please don't go. The number of so-called religous people I know who cheat on their spouses is so deeply sickening I'd just hate to see you all leave.

I think god wouldn't be too happy with this new town. He wants us to walk among the non-believers is the way I read the bible.

Which means he wants us to live in the real world..not one made-to-order. It smacks of a cult to me..even if it is Catholic.
