CT Moves On
Over the last few weeks (actually months), folks from all over the country have been weighing in on our Democratic Senate primary. And explaining to everyone how I and my neighbors would vote, and what we were thinking. Now the vote is in and the know-it-alls are explaining what it all means. Here's one of the latest examples. Too bad most of them have no sense of the dynamics in this very blue and increasingly exurban/suburban state. (The Lieberman Lesson does better than many).
CT's the most Republican of all the Democratic Party strongholds. And if you don't know have a clue what that is supposed to mean then you have no clue about CT politics. But if you want to try, instead of listening to MoveOn.org, etc., look at the state's voter registration profile, and the vote results in various towns over the last decade in gubernatorial and state senate and house elections as compared to US House and Senate races. Suburbanites and exurbanites here vote fashionally liberal except in things that touch their wallets. Or might force their children to attend economically and racially integrated schools.

now it may be easier to understand why i prefer Texas.
even though it is hot (25 days over 100 and counting this summer), it is an honest heat...and no one tries to justify it with stupid sayings like, "it's not the heat, it's the humidity."
Ah, yes, Texas. Honest politics. Where everyone acknowledges that the LBJ machine was stuffing the ballot box in South Texas, where Jim Hightower is simultaneously a "get-the-government-off-our-backs-and-out-of-our-bedrooms libertarian, a there-oughta-be-a-law increase regulation populist, and a liberal and true conservative, where Jim Wright can connect DFW to his district 30 miles away and take away the Dallas boys flights all while managing to get a little extra green into his election fund coffers, and where Tom DeLay is a victim of a liberal media vendetta.
Oh, wait, Texas is also the place where their politicians were incredibly honest -- about gerrymandering the voting districts to insure the folks in power got reelected and more of their own joined them! Now that's honest. Not like here in CT where it was all about creating "fair and representative districts" when we lost a Congressional seat. I mean it's only fair that we create a bunch of fingers in the Fifth District so that three cities from central CT get added to Litchfield County, and the northwestern Hartford suburbs get removed. It's only "fair" that a Republican congresswoman get a lot more Democrats in her district so she can represent them. Oh, and lets see if we can do something about those Republican suburbs that have been opposing our Democratic rep in the Third District while we're at it. What if we split them up between three districts. Wouldn't that be fair -- make each district share in the burden of representing them?
Oh, and by the way, it really isn't the heat -- it is the humidity. Like they say, there must be something in the water....and in this case the water is in the air we breath.
you DO understand!!!
Delay's problems stem from the fact that he tried to appear "proper and respectable" like those yankee blue bloods up there...and you can't bullshit a bullshitter. Ronnie Earl can stack it as high and deep as anyone so he caught on right quick. If Delay had just been out in the open with his illegalities, he would still be in the House instead of working to avoid time in the Big House.
Everyone knew LBJ and what he was up to. Hell, they all know that Ladybird purchased land between Dallas and Fort Worth just a few years before someone decided to build an airport there. Coincidence? Nah, just living large in the land of opportunity. Remember when our govenor was involved in the SMU football program - back when the team was good? If some yankee asshat hadn't whined to the NCAA about it, they might even have won a title. But no sirree, instead they are the only school to ever get the death penalty for cheating...Ohio State? Slap on the wrist....
