CT is looking more and more like TX

Our weather this Fall has been more like being back in FT Worth than being in New England. It's been warm for so long the neighbor has been lounging by the pool until a few days ago. And it's not that they're not there because it's too cold --- we've finally gotten some rain! Heck, I was in shorts and a t-shirt when I was out at 9:00 pm the end of last week. I'm not even sure where my winter coat is -- and it's almost November!

But here's why it's really starting to look and feel like TX around here.

Football has invaded New England.

UCONN is leading the Big East, and could be ranked higher in the BCS this week than UT! Even the small town high schools are starting football programs. On Friday nights the sportscast takes up half the broadcast, and they're showing highlights of high school games from all around the state. Next thing you know Southington will decide not to open a second high school because it will hurt the sports programs, a la Plano in the 80's. Oh wait, that IS happening. But it's the girls softball team they want to keep together .... thank God some Yankeeness remains in the state! Plano and the rest of TX probably doesn't even know girls play high school sports besides cheer squad.

it's a good thing you dragged your sorry butt back there if you think Texans don't have girls sports programs.
UT in and of itself has been running a renowned women's athletic program for years. The Hall of Honor there boosts notables such as Judy Conradt, who was the inspiration and standard that today's top basketball women's basketball coaches such as Pat Summit modeled their programs after as well as connecticut's own Dr. Donna Lopiano, a pioneer among woman AD's in the years immediately preceding and following Title IX. During her term alone, Texas women won 18 national championships (26 overall).

(UConn counts 7 nationals women's title in its storied history of support for the fairer gender)

but, yeah, i WAS surprised to see the huskies show up on the ESPN crawl with a number in front of their name.

Conradt was the best for years, but for all the ink she didn't get you'd have thought her program didn't exist. But then again, they played in a vacuum...no tv, 200 fans at a game. Did Darrell Royal ever even see a UT women's hoops game live? And you have to admit, for Billy Bob and the boys, no matter how good a women's program is, they don't play real sports.

Time to go pick on Rat. I've got a nice big BoSox logo for his blog...
