Informal poll

Jenn is ranting about judgements people make when they only look at the outer appearance.
It reminded me of a statement I heard Corby make on the Ticket, a sportstalk radio station in Dallas. However, I have realized that the statement and the thoughts I posted about an informal poll were quite inappropriate and have removed them. If anyone was offended, that wasn't my intent. It is just another example of a man following through on something that "seemed like a good idea at the time."
Sort of like the SF 49ers PR director (Kirk Reynolds) I mentioned in an earlier post

Happy Birthday & Thank you!

Mr. Les Paul
I heard on NPR this morning that today is the 90th birthday of Les Paul.
To Mr. Paul, I say, "Thank you!Thank you!Thank you!Thank you!Thank you!Thank you!"

I love electric guitar and we have his innovations and inspirations as the tap root for modern sounds. Click the link above to read his (brief) story.

I don't want to be the grown-up...

Wondering where his coolness went...

I remember the day it happened like it was yesterday. Only it was 21 years ago.

My wife and I had moved into a rent house when our oldest daughter was born (kids & apartments didn't work together in my mind then). I was in the alley behind the house, talking with the neighbor who lived behind us. It was a beautiful spring afternoon, probably about 70 degrees and sunny. It was late Sunday afternoon, probably about 4:00. Suddenly we heard the unmistakable sound of a six pack of empties being dropped from a car.

Being only one house up the alley from the street, we took off running. While we weren't in time to "catch" them, we were able to yell and holler enough that the culprits accelerated rapidly to the next corner, where they disappeared with a whoop and a holler. Music, laughter and taunts washed back on us like the wake of a ski boat meeting beach sand. Phil and I looked at each other, picked up the paper bag of busted bottles and went back to our lives.

But at that moment, I knew mine was forever changed. That was the first time I assumed the role of "The Grown-up." From then on, I knew that I was expected to be the one to chase the wild boys, chastise the impertinent pre-adolescent and uphold the honor of wronged daughters. It was like changing uniforms, a Yankee fan being forced to don a Red Sox jersey.

I still have lots of fun and many are waiting for me to grow up (including Stephanie, my wife). But I knew at exactly that moment that things were different.

When did it happen to you?

General Dwight D. Eisenhower

Today is the 61th anniversary of D-Day , that fateful day depicted in the movie Saving Private Ryan.
There is no way I can understand the mood of the country at that time; it was 15 years before I was born. But I would like to add my thanks to those who were around at the time - both those that went to fight and those that stayed behind.

War seems pointless to me in so many ways. I am thankful that I haven't had to face an enemy that wants me dead. But I felt it important to add my voice to the thanks going out to the "greatest generation" that stemmed the tide of Facism.

May God grant peace to those still living who endured this struggle. On both sides of the line, for God's love is universal and knows political bounds. (Take heart Democrats! We are loved too, not matter what the GOP tells us.)
